Lately, however, concerns around growth in tobacco use have shifted away from cigarette smoking-which has declined across the nation from a rate of 20.1 percent in 2011 to 15.5 percent in 2018-in response to the rise of vaping and e-cigarette use in recent years, especially among youth. In the first part of our BRFSS spotlight series, we analyzed newly available 2018 data for an existing measure, Adult Smoking, and a more complete set of existing data from 2017 (as data for 2018 was not available in a majority of states) for a brand new measure, Adult E-Cigarette Use.Īccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, smoking was the leading cause of preventable death in 2017, with cigarette smoking being responsible for approximately 480,000 deaths per year in the United States. These measures are available on SHADAC's State Health Compare. Our analysis will focus on health behaviors-smoking and e-cigarette us e, binge drinking, an d obesity - for adults (age 18 and older) and, when appropriate or particularly relevant, will include breakdowns by race/ethnicity and educational attainment. (as well as three United States’ territories) regarding health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and use of preventive services.
